No one else seemed to have noticed, too busy paying attention to the steep steps they were walking down, but Bronte was unsettled. Nothing felt right.

‘Bronts, we’re here,’ Tonkins said.

At the bottom of the hill was a cliff face, with many cave openings in its surface. But there was no sign of any firecats.

‘Where are they?’ Bronte whispered to Tonkins.

He shrugged.

‘Where do they migrate to over the summer?’

‘No one really knows. I always worry that Dotty won’t come back though, that she’ll have forgotten me.’

‘Why would she?’ Bronte said. ‘After all, the firecats choose their knight, right? Not the other way round.’

‘True,’ he said, sounding reassured.

‘Why do they come to the caves?’ Bronte asked, her nerves making her talkative. ‘Rather than flying straight to their knights?’

‘It’s tradition,’ Tonkins replied with a hint of awe, before considering and adding, ‘Plus they like eating the foogle-fungal that grows in the caves.’

‘Everyone, quiet!’ Lady Fennel called. ‘Let’s give our firecats time to recognise who’s out here.’ She stepped closer to Bronte and whispered gently, ‘Are you ready? I promise you’ll love this.’

Bronte nodded, trying to ignore the butterflies in her tummy. The class stood in silence and waited, the kind of magical silence where you know something amazing is about to happen.

And then it did.

Fire blasted out of the cave openings, followed moments later by a dozen colourful, winged cats. Bronte gasped as she watched them soar through the air, sweeping and swooping, painting the sky with fire and creating a rainbow of their own smoke. It was a sight to behold and all Bronte’s doubts and worries fell away. She wouldn’t have missed this sight for all the world.

They twisted and turned, performing their airborne dance to perfection, before slowly beginning to dive towards the children.
